House of Satin Review and some shots in the set by Lauren HorwoodPhotography

Hello all!
Sorry it took me a while to get this up! I’ve been a busy gal!

So here it is, the long awaited House of Satin review! I’ll be discussing look, quality, fit, price, postage and my overall opinion of this set! As well as sharing some pictures from a recent shoot with Lauren Horwood where I wore it!

So recently House of Satin has crept up on my radar, mainly through all the lovely British babes I follow posting their goodies and I got interested. I read the review done by The Nylon Swish and Jasmine of Quirky and Curvy and thought I’d give them a try myself, especially really only just starting to build a collection of foundation garments and wanting to have a variety.

Price & postage

 I purchased:
  • The lace cup long line vintage styled bra in a 36B- £11.95 which is $24.87AUD
  • Vintage style black satin control brief size M - £9.75 which is $20.29AUD
  • Vintage style black satin suspender belt size S- £14.00

which is $29.13AUD Totaling £61.37 which was $127.70 AUD with only £5.00/$10.40 postage!

I felt good considering they were a whole set and I was excited for when they arrived. The prices for a set where very reasonable considering the cost of brands like What Katie Did and Kiss Me Deadly. They arrived in less than a week which I thought was quite impressive and I was excited to get to try them on!

Fit & Quality

The Bra

My bra was spot on with size. The 36B fit comfortably and it’s a bra I’ve worn a few times over the past two weeks of owning it. The straps are still quite stiff with adjusting but I think over time this will reduce. I do also really like the low back of this bra, as it means I can wear it with things that are a more on the lower back side. It was sewn well, on mine I found no fraying or issues with its construction. I absolutely love this bra and am very happy with the purchase!

Suspender belt

The sizing on this was a bit of a nightmare. My natural waist sits at 30 inches, so I bought the small which is the smallest size they offer and it felt too big. My primary suspender belt is my What Katie Did 6 Strap Harlow Suspender belt which sits up on my waist and it doesn’t move, which is how I like my suspender belts (click here for my review of that belt).

I’ve worn this suspender belt once to work with the matching briefs and honestly feared at one point it would slip straight down my legs. I think my only saving grace was that I have a bigger bottom. It sat right on my hips instead of my waist which made it extremely uncomfortable for me to wear as well as I found it slipped around HEAPS! I tried wearing it later in the week with cotton and had more success. I think the full brief and suspender fabric are both too slippery to make them functional to wear together, unless you maybe wear the brief over the top. I will note too, since I’ve had a lot of comments, that the actual suspender clips are mental and did hold throughout the day.

Briefs

I love the briefs and I don’t. Again, this is a sizing issue. I bought the matching waist size but they don’t list hip size. They arrived and were uncomfortably painful around my legs and my butt (see above pic). I opted for the brief after seeing the feedback from Elinor and Jasmine on the smaller briefs they purchased but definitely will need to size up if I get briefs again in future, which is a shame as the waist fit was great. The leg tightness is an issue, so much so I wore them only for my shoot two weeks ago for just over 1.5 hours and haven’t worn them since, because on the way home the sheer tightness around the tops of my thighs actually started to make me feel unwell.

I think not having hip measurements on things like briefs is going to cause a lot of issues for ladies like myself who may have a bit more back or leg but a smaller waist. I may try these again in the next size up but am ultimately undecided. That being said, when I had them on, aside from how they sat on my thighs due to the tightness, I did like their look.

Overall, I would buy from House of Satin again but primarily their bras suspender belts, I willing to try sizing up on the brief but I am unsure how much this would help my issue.

I think they are a great little company that do have some very pretty things but I do believe they have some sizing issues they could be worked on to improve their customer experience as the current sizing could potentially cut them out of the market for the curvier girls.

Considering the fact my bra size varies so much from my butt and the fact hip measurements aren’t given I probably won’t try a girdle or corslette, purely as I think the fit would be a massive issue. For ladies looking to purchase I think you REALLY need to take your body shape into account due to no hip sizes being given. If you are slender, sizing probably won’t be an issue but if you are a bit curvier with more on the thighs/butt/tummy I’d suggest sizing up on anything that’s going around your hips.

I hope this has helped and I look forward to another review coming your way soon!

Til tomorrow!

Frisky Friday ~ What Katie Did & the Nylon Swish

So....its Friday and I'm back at it with a new flare and understanding on how I can make blogger work for me to bring you even more content here!

So my second Frisky Friday! How exciting! As I said in my first Frisky Friday post, I wanted to start this segment for girls with bodies like mine. I'm not plus sized, but I'm not skinny either. I'm big butted and small busted and I struggle to find people with relateable body shapes to mine. The overwhelming response I got on my first post across social media on my first post told me I'd really made the right choice in starting this segment, so I've allocated time to make sure I do posts for you all once a fortnight on a new item for you all!

This week I decided to go with some staples in my everyday wardrobe and two things I'd definitely recommend to newbies looking for a place to start with vintage lingerie!

I'm going to start with the bullet bra. This was my first ever bullet bra. I actually wore it initially for one of my favorite ever shoots, which was a Playboy inspired one done this time last year.

Photography by Lauren Horwood
It was really my first time ever wearing a bullet bra and while I felt banging in the shoot, I didn't really fill it, despite the next size down being too small. So, this beauty sat in my 'lingerie' tall boy until I came across the ever stunning Nylon Swish on instagram. This lady inspired me to wear this bra more often and after meeting her at the markets and buying the pads that fill the difference, I've worn it out 4 times in the past few months!

As a girl who normally wears padded bras, wearing a bullet bra is very different. There is no push together. There is no roundness. There is perky points. I have certain shirts I want to try and wear this under, especially coming into winter! I also found this bra was a great starter as its soft cups mean I didn't feel overwhelmed by the 'pointy' shape when wearing. If like me, you find the cups a bit tricky to fill, What Katie Did sell fillers that you wear like chicken fillets that give it a more structured shape. I always wear mine with the bra and I am trying to wear it more.

Now honestly, for a beginner this suspender belt is magical. Its the one I wear 99% of the time if if I'm going to wear stockings. It has 6 straps which I feel is a great introduction to wearing suspenders without it being overwhelming (6 for me personally is my happy number). Its comfortable to wear and is adjustable in size (3 different eyehook closures on the back). I love this suspender belt. It was my first REAL suspender belt and its just SO incredibly comfortable! Its perfect for holding up stockings, the straps are adjustable and the garter clips are good quality! Definitely a recommendation and at $56 AU dollars its quality that won't break the budget for a first timer!

Now the stockings are something special. These are my first pair of full length vintage stockings that feature a keyhole and a back seam whereas my previous ones were all too short and were seamless. I was so ESTATIC when the Nylon Swish was at the last Sydney Rock n Roll Markets and made a point of purchasing a pair of her genuine vintage stockings! These stockings are SO incredibly comfortable! Like I honestly have no words to describe them. They fit better than any modern pair of stockings I've ever owned. I cannot WAIT to purchase more pairs in the future. They quality is incredible! Two months on and not even a nip or a tear or a run. They just don't make stockings like this anymore! I've definitely been converted and I know you will too once you try them!

Plus, I find with vintage lingerie there is also an element of feeling sexy. I'm learning to love my vintage lingerie. It makes me feel good and I'm trying to really change my thinking around how my body should look because I don't follow any other real mainstream trends....so why should I follow that one too! My body is fab and I like it wrapped in vintage goodness and that's good enough for me!

Where you can buy these from is linked at the top of the post. In this picture too you can see the bullet bra pads I wear with my bra!

I hope you have all loved this post and I'm looking forward to another Frisky Friday post in a fortnight from now!

Frisky Friday ~ Valentine Day Edition ~ Von Follies Madame X Set

The Frisky Friday segment.....

So two of my new years resolutions were the brainchild behind this series of blog posts! They were:
  1. Expanding my vintage and vintage repro lingerie/shapewear collection and start wearing them daily
  2. Be less self conscious and apologetic about my body as there is nothing wrong with it to be ashamed of.
So I've come a long way in regards to my body positivity. I have 4 vintage boudoir shoots under my belt now, I regularly post body positivity selfies on my Instagram, but there are still certain angles I don't talk about and I don't often feel overly comfortable in lingerie. So I thought I'd work to break the mold by sharing images here with my followers of lingerie I've loved and want to review for you all!

Now I'm not really a skinny girl. I have a narrow waist, a small to medium bust, petite shoulders and a big butt and legs. I do tend to hold weight on my tummy as well. I am fit and active, I try and eat the right foods but I'm still only part way through my weight loss journey. I've seen a lot of bloggers with similar figures to me online but most have a bigger bust than me, so I hope this space will help the smaller busted ladies out!

So my first Frisky Friday Review....

The Madame X Set by Dita Von Teese!

Now I actually purchased this set at the end of last year for a glamour shoot I did with Lauren Horwood (Photograph above taken by Lauren) and I wanted something outside of what I normally wore for shoots. I've always kind of covered my middle for photoshoots, as its definitely my personal problem area and I actually settled on this set by chance! Its now one I wear regularly in my personal life and considering the red and sassy cut I thought it would be a perfect start for Frisky Friday for upcoming Valentines day!

I honestly LOVE the briefs. I wear them a lot, especially under swing styles. I find the high sit more comfortable when wearing a pettiocat and just in general. The waistband, which is strappy is adjustable, which means if I'm a bit bloated I can loosen the firmness a bit and it still fits beautifully. I love the lacing on the front and around the sides. Its such a subtle sexy feature. This brief has really been a step forward for me in terms of body love, as you can see the crease of my tummy but I find in this set I don't care. I just feel amazing. Without a double my favorite briefs out of all the Dita stuff I own.

Being a smaller busted girl I opted for the wireless bra. It fits beautifully, offering enough support that I can wear it comfortably all day. I'm still learning to embrace my smaller bust, an unexpected side affect of a hospital stay in 2013. The bust detailing across the top really draws attention to the lace top and I find the wider back is comfortable for daily wear as well.

Stockings: Nude (I can't remember the brand)

As you saw in my shoot I wore the set with the suspender belt as well. I personally prefer the set's detailing without the suspender belt but it does look lovely with the set regardless. I did find the belt ran bigger than the briefs and ideally should have sized down as mine slip around a lot as they are too big in the waist band. The straps are a bit thinner than I like for my stockings but they hold stockings comfortably and the clasps are of good quality.

Overall, this is my favorite Dita Von Teese set (I own around 8 sets total) and its purely down to comfort. I love the full brief and the bra and as I embrace my smaller bust I hope to wear the bra more often in outfits. Its great for curvier girls thanks to the adjustable underwear design and for the bigger busted girls you can find the bra for this set with underwire here
